FOODSERVICEWARE · PAPER CUP

The paper-cup answer lives in the bottom seal and use conditions.

From sidewall blank to complete paper cup, the project addresses sidewall and bottom stocks, two-sided coatings, side seam, bottom seal, rim, lid, condensation, handling and forming rate together.

Engineering scope | paper, candidate coatings, converting, finished articles and responsibilities are governed together, with project results delivered by evidence version.

01 · SCENARIO

Start with the real scenario, then discuss materials.

The same cup format becomes a different task with a different drink and service duration.

SCENE · 01

Hot drinks

Assess hot-liquid contact, steam, wall softening, handling, rim/lid fit, side seam and bottom seal.

SCENE · 02

Cold and iced drinks

Assess external condensation, ice impact, extended hold, sleeve/print friction and bottom-edge water uptake.

SCENE · 03

Complex beverages

Dairy, sugar, acid, fat or particulate beverages use their real formulation and use/cleaning mode, combining water screening with real-beverage validation in a tiered evaluation.

02 · COMPONENTS / BOM

Cup BOM: sidewall, bottom, seams and lid determine the outcome together.

Every test, compliance or environmental conclusion must be tied to the complete structure, suppliers, batches and specimen version.

Sidewall system

Sidewall stock, inner/outer treatments, printing, side-seam zone and sleeve/insulation architecture.

Bottom system

Bottom stock, bottom coating, knurling/compression geometry, sealing window and exposed cut edges.

Rim system

Rim curl, lid fit, drinking feel, opening force and possible lidding-film architecture.

03—05 · ENGINEERING AXIS

Paper, coating and converting jointly determine the finished article.

Each stage retains inputs, specimen version, decision method and fallback criteria. A laboratory flat sheet answers only its defined question.

03 · PAPER

Sidewall stock

Stiffness, caliper, forming direction, edge quality, print surface and dimensional stability after wet heat must be evaluated with the cup geometry.

03 · PAPER

Bottom stock

Bottom folding and knurling reshape coating and fiber states, so dedicated data are built on the bottom-stock–knurl–sidewall combination.

04 · COATING

Inside functions

Candidate structures must balance liquid resistance, sealing, forming, adhesion and cut-edge risk across the real sidewall/bottom combination.

04 · COATING

Outside functions

Build an independent outer-surface design around condensation, handling, printing, friction and nesting, coordinated with the inner functional layer.

05 · CONVERTING · 01

Blank to sidewall

Confirm die-cut edges, side-seam overlap, heat/adhesion, rim curl and print registration; record equipment, tooling, rate and environment.

05 · CONVERTING · 02

Bottom sealing

Build the seal window for the sidewall–bottom-stock–knurl structure and assess leakage, peel and post-hot-liquid stability on complete cups.

06 · FAILURE MAP

Trace material, structural and process responsibility from the failure location.

Use location, medium, time, temperature, action, specimen version and failure progression to break water resistance into locatable, correctable engineering problems.

FAILURE · 01

Slow bottom leak

May combine knurl geometry, seal window, cut edge, bottom stock and coating-continuity issues.

FAILURE · 02

Side seam and rim

Overlap opening, rim cracking, lid mismatch and drinking-edge defects require separate diagnosis.

FAILURE · 03

Softening and distortion

Hot liquid, condensation, handling, nesting and service duration jointly affect stiffness and appearance.

07 · G0—G4

Five gates control the path from an idea to an external conclusion.

Sample, production, compliance, shelf-life and environmental claims advance by evidence stage; validation-pending status remains transparent and traceable.

G0

Duty definition

Define contents, temperature, contact time, distribution, storage, use mode, target market and owners, using complete inputs to set the material-conclusion boundary.

G1

Material and structure

Confirm the complete BOM, batches and specimen version for paper, sizing, coating, ink, adhesive and seams, archiving emulsion, flat-sheet and finished-article data by object level.

G2

Converting and article

Validate coating, drying, winding, printing, cutting, creasing, sealing and forming windows, then recheck critical failures on complete articles.

G3

Use and compliance

Build food-contact and chemical evidence for the target market, food type, contact conditions and complete formulation. Each claim maps to valid documentation.

G4

Scenario and release

After justified use, distribution and evidence review, the project proceeds to decisions on production introduction, shelf-life conclusions, public claims and end-of-life pathways.

Performance values

Each fixed value carries its specimen, method, conditions, units, sample size, batch and report status, forming a reproducible data passport.

Food contact

Material and finished-article review and testing are organized by target market, use, food type, time/temperature and complete BOM to form complete-pack compliance evidence.

PFAS / chemistry

‘Not intentionally added’, ‘not detected’ and ‘PFAS-free’ are each bound to an analyte list, threshold, method, specimen and supply-chain declaration.

Plastic-free / plastic reduction

Define plastic, polymer, coating and complete-structure calculation boundaries, then compare material use per pack, functional equivalence and production losses between baseline and candidate structures.

Recycling / composting

Recyclability and compostability each map the complete article, methods, facility access, regional systems and valid certification or testing into a distinct end-of-life route.

Microwave / shelf life

Microwave, hot-food, chilled, frozen and shelf-life suitability build scenario-specific validation results around defined food, container, closure, equipment and time/temperature conditions.

High-speed production

Progress from lab film formation, hand samples and low-speed trials to target equipment, rate, quality system and sustained-run validation.

Submit the cup, beverage and machine together.

Prioritize sidewall/bottom stock, inner/outer coating, cup geometry, beverage conditions, sealing mode, equipment and known failures; the project output forms structural guidance, a validation combination and next-step action plan.
